Community Development Block Grant Program
(CDBG)
The CDBG program is of interest to homeowners, municipal
officials, non-profit agencies that provide services to seniors
and low income clients, public works contractors and home improvement
contractors.
Summary:
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides Camden
County with annual direct grants that revitalize neighborhoods,
expand affordable housing and economic opportunities, and/or improve
community facilities and services, principally to benefit low-and
moderate-income persons.
Purpose:
Since 1979 CDBG has been the backbone of improvement efforts in
Camden County, providing a flexible source of annual grant funds
that, with the participation of local citizens, devote to the activities
that best serve particular development priorities, provided that
these projects either:
- Benefit low-and moderate-income persons
- Prevent or eliminate slums or blight
- Meet other urgent community development needs. The CDBG Entitlement
Communities program provides Camden County with approximately
$2.8 million annually.
As one of the Nation's largest Federal grant programs,
the impact of CDBG-funded projects can be seen in the housing stock,
the business environment, the streets and the public facilities
of the County. Although the rehabilitation of affordable housing
has traditionally been the largest single use of CDBG funds, the
program is also an increasingly important catalyst for economic
development activitities that expand job and business opportunities
for lower income persons and neighborhoods.
